Hope and
Dreams Initiative

On a visit to Nigeria, a six-year old girl who’s a devoted reader asked her mother one day to take her to the library. Her mother told her that there are no libraries to be found. ‘Mummy, why don’t you gather your friends together and raise money and build one for the children of this community and I will invite Michelle Obama to come.’  The young girl’s response prompted the Hope and Dreams Initiative.

Hope and Dreams Initiative is changing the poor reading culture by creating reading rooms in public schools in Nigeria. This program is improving the future of children in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria, filling reading rooms with fiction and nonfiction books, fun, educational materials about hand washing and by incorporating the WASH program in schools we can keep children safe and healthy so that they can learn, grow and proper as par of the resilient communities.

Niger Delta is one of the most impoverished and under-served population in Nigeria and the State rank is having the poorest level of access to sanitation and second to poorest to level of illiterate and highest number of dropouts in primary and secondary schools. As a result, school children and their communities are left vulnerable to preventable diseases, preventing them from receiving the education they need to thrive.

Hope and Dreams Initiative will expand this program in every school by creating rooms filled with fiction and nonfiction books and posters on germs and at the same time, Hope and Dreams Initiative will implement hygiene education and awareness programs, working to train teachers, school staff and PTA member on school hygiene. We will also directly teach children the value of safe water, hand washing, basic hygiene and sanitation.

Hope and Dreams Initiative also mentors young girls by sponsoring their education and providing them with uniforms, shoes and backpacks every school year. These girls do not have real role models and are often sent off to marry or as a maid at a very young age.
